# How does social life relate to the brain?

**Psychology studies how people think, feel and behave.** The paper we have covered asks whether the size of a person's social circle helps explain why two people with similar signs of brain damage can have very different memories.

## The papers we've covered

- [Does Two Hours a Week in Nature Change How You Feel?](https://papersays.com/p/does-two-hours-a-week-in-nature-change-how-you-feel): People who spent at least two hours a week in nature were more likely to report good health and high well-being. Under two hours, no different from none at all.
- [Does Feeling You'll Be Remembered Protect Your Mind?](https://papersays.com/p/does-feeling-youll-be-remembered-protect-your-mind): In a survey of 2,912 adults, people who expected to be remembered after death reported less depression, anxiety and addiction. Belief in an afterlife did not.
- [Is an Exercise Habit Better for Mood Than Exercise Itself?](https://papersays.com/p/is-an-exercise-habit-better-for-mood-than-exercise-itself): 876 older adults were tracked for a year. Sticking with exercise, more than how much they moved, came before lower stress, anxiety and loneliness.
- [What Best Predicts Depression and Anxiety in Teenagers?](https://papersays.com/p/what-best-predicts-depression-and-anxiety-in-teenagers): A survey of 1,088 teens put eight suspects side by side. Struggling with emotions and loneliness beat social media, sleep and exercise in all four outcomes.
- [Do Bigger Social Circles Help the Brain Resist Damage?](https://papersays.com/p/do-bigger-social-circles-help-the-brain-resist-damage): Same blood signs of brain damage, very different memories. This Framingham study asks whether a bigger social circle helps explain the gap.

## Questions people ask

### Do bigger social circles help memory?

In a large community study they went with better memory at similar levels of brain damage markers.

### Does that prove friends protect the brain?

No. It is an association; healthier people may also keep wider social lives.

### Who was studied?

Participants from the long-running Framingham community study.
