PaperSays Terms of Use

Last updated: 5 October 2026

Your use of the PaperSays iOS app is also governed by Apple’s Standard End User License Agreement: https://www.apple.com/legal/internet-services/itunes/dev/stdeula/

These Terms are an agreement between you and {controller} (“we”, “us”). By creating an account or using PaperSays you accept these Terms and our Privacy Policy (https://papersays.com/privacy). If you don’t accept them, don’t use the app.

1. Who can use the app

  • You must be at least 16 years old, or the minimum age in your country if higher. VERIFY 13 vs 16 (launch-checklist 0.7; must match Privacy Policy §10 and the store age rating).
  • You need an account. You sign in with Apple or Google; you’re responsible for keeping that sign-in secure.
  • One person per account. Don’t share or sell your account.

2. What the app is

PaperSays turns research papers into short audio episodes, grouped in topics (“hubs”). You can ask questions about an episode by text or voice, take notes and check what you learned.

Every episode shows its source paper, an evidence label, the study’s limitations, and labels each line as what the paper says, what we explain in plain words, or what goes beyond the paper (our interpretation, introduced as “My read”).

3. AI-generated content: please read

  • Episodes are written and narrated with the help of AI from the original paper and reviewed by an editor before they’re published. VERIFY the editor pass happens for every live episode (launch-checklist 4.4).
  • Answers to your questions, spoken answers and AI note summaries are generated by AI when you ask. They are not reviewed by a person before you see them. They can be wrong, incomplete or out of date, even when they cite the paper. Each answer shows whether it comes from the paper or goes beyond it.
  • Not professional advice. Nothing in PaperSays is medical, health, legal, financial or other professional advice, and it is not a substitute for a qualified professional. Don’t make decisions about your health, treatment or money based on the app. In an emergency, contact your local emergency services.
  • A summary, not the paper. An episode is a short summary of one study. One study rarely settles a question. Read the original paper (linked on every episode) before relying on a finding.
  • Papers belong to their authors. We link and credit every source. Featuring a paper doesn’t mean its authors or publisher endorse PaperSays, or that we endorse the paper.
  • Your questions go to an AI provider. To answer, the text of your question is sent through our servers to a third-party AI provider. Details, including where it is processed, are in the Privacy Policy (section 5). You’ll be told before your first question is sent (LAUNCH-002).

4. Free and Premium

  • PaperSays is free to download and has a Free plan. Premium is an optional paid subscription that adds more episodes and features.
  • What each plan includes and its limits (for example how many questions you can ask a day) are shown in the app (Profile → Subscription, and on the Premium page). We may change what the Free plan includes.
  • If we reduce what Premium includes in a way that matters, we’ll tell you in the app before it applies, and you can cancel as described in section 5. VERIFY wording with the lawyer (consumer law on unilateral changes; Apple developer agreement Schedule 2 §5.4, see audit §0).
  • Some features may be paused for everyone for safety, cost or technical reasons (for example AI answers when a provider is down). If a paid feature is unavailable for a long time, contact us at support@papersays.com.
  • We may give Premium for free for a limited time (for example to beta testers, or with an offer code). When that time ends you go back to Free unless you subscribe. Offer codes are redeemed through Apple, on the terms Apple shows before you confirm.

5. Subscriptions, auto-renewal and cancellation

VERIFY against Apple’s current wording (Auto-renewable subscriptions page and Schedule 2) and with the lawyer before publishing.

  1. Plans. Premium is an auto-renewable subscription, sold monthly (“Premium Monthly”) or yearly (“Premium Yearly”). Both give the same Premium features.
  2. Price and period. The price and the billing period are shown in the app and on Apple’s purchase sheet before you buy. Prices are in your local currency and may differ by country. Taxes are included where the App Store includes them. There is no free trial: Premium starts as soon as you buy it.
  3. Payment. Payment is charged to your Apple Account when you confirm the purchase.
  4. Automatic renewal. Your subscription renews automatically for the same period at the then-current price unless auto-renew is turned off at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. Your Apple Account is charged for the renewal within the 24 hours before the current period ends.
  5. Manage or cancel. You can manage or cancel at any time after purchase in Settings → your name → Subscriptions on your iPhone, or from the app (Profile → Subscription → Manage subscription). Cancelling turns off auto-renew: you keep Premium until the end of the period you’ve paid for, then you go back to Free.
  6. Switching plans. You can switch between monthly and yearly in the same place. Apple decides when the change takes effect and how any remaining time is handled. VERIFY subscription levels (audit §2.1, PAY-009).
  7. Refunds. Purchases are made through Apple, so refunds are handled by Apple under its policies (https://reportaproblem.apple.com). We can’t issue refunds ourselves. Except where the law requires otherwise, cancelling doesn’t refund the current period. If Apple refunds a purchase, Premium ends when the refund is processed.
  8. Price changes. If the price changes, Apple tells you in advance and, where required, asks for your consent before renewing at the new price.
  9. Deleting your account or the app doesn’t cancel your subscription. Apple keeps billing until you cancel in Settings → your name → Subscriptions. Cancel first, then delete.
  10. Restore. If you reinstall or change phones, use “Restore purchases” (on the Premium page or in Profile → Subscription) while signed in to the same Apple Account.
  11. Other stores. PaperSays is sold on the iPhone App Store only today. If we add other stores, their payment terms will apply to purchases made there and we’ll update this section.

6. Acceptable use

When you use PaperSays, don’t:

  • Break the law or help someone else do so.
  • Use the app, or the AI features, to create content that is unlawful, harassing, hateful, sexually explicit, violent, or that infringes someone else’s rights.
  • Try to get around plan limits, locks or paywalls, share Premium access, or resell content or answers.
  • Copy, download in bulk, scrape, re-publish or redistribute episodes, transcripts, artwork or answers, except for personal, non-commercial use (for example sharing a link to an episode, or quoting a short passage with credit).
  • Use automated tools or scripts to send questions, or use the app to train or test an AI model.
  • Try to bypass the AI’s topic limits, extract its instructions (“prompt injection”), or make it produce harmful content.
  • Reverse engineer, decompile or interfere with the app, our servers or other users, except where the law allows it.
  • Overload our service, probe it for weaknesses, or access data that isn’t yours. If you find a security issue, please tell us at support@papersays.com.
  • Pretend to be someone else or misrepresent your link with us.

7. Your content

  • “Your content” = your questions, notes, ratings, reports, feedback and support messages.
  • You keep your rights in your content. You give us a worldwide, non-exclusive, royalty-free licence to store, process and transmit it only to run and improve the app (for example sending your question to an AI provider to answer it, syncing your notes, fixing a wrong answer you reported). This licence ends when you delete the content or your account, except for what the Privacy Policy says we keep.
  • You’re responsible for what you put in. Don’t put sensitive personal information (for example health details about you or others) in questions or notes.
  • How we handle personal data, and what we keep after you delete your account, is in the Privacy Policy.

8. Our content

Episodes, scripts, audio, artwork, the app and its design belong to us or our licensors. Paper titles, abstracts and quotes belong to their authors and publishers and are used under their licences or as permitted by law. VERIFY licence check on every published paper (launch-checklist 3.8). We give you a personal, non-transferable, revocable right to use the app and its content for your own non-commercial use, under Apple’s Standard EULA and these Terms.

9. Other services

The app relies on other companies: Apple (App Store, payments, Sign in with Apple, speech recognition), Google (Google Sign-In), our hosting provider, our AI providers, and RevenueCat (subscription status). Their terms apply to your use of their services. We’re not responsible for their services, but we choose them carefully and list them in the Privacy Policy. Links to papers and other websites open outside the app; we don’t control those sites.

Apple is not a party to these Terms and is not responsible for the app or its content. VERIFY whether the lawyer wants the full Apple “minimum terms” acknowledgement here even though we use the standard EULA.

10. Ending your use (termination)

  • You can stop at any time and delete your account in the app (Profile → Delete account), or ask us at support@papersays.com or https://papersays.com/delete-account. Remember to cancel your subscription first (section 5, point 9).
  • We may suspend or close your account, or limit features, if you seriously or repeatedly break these Terms, if the law requires it, or to protect other users or the service. Where reasonable we’ll warn you first and tell you why. If you think we got it wrong, contact support@papersays.com.
  • If we close your account for a reason other than your breach of these Terms while you have an active Premium subscription, we’ll tell you how to request a refund from Apple. VERIFY with the lawyer.
  • If we stop offering PaperSays, we’ll tell you at least 30 days in advance in the app. VERIFY notice period.
  • After your account ends, sections 3, 7 (the parts about content we keep), 8, 11, 12 and 14 still apply.

11. No warranty

We work hard to make PaperSays accurate and reliable, but the app and its content are provided “as is” and “as available”. To the extent the law allows, we don’t promise that the app or any episode or answer will be accurate, complete, uninterrupted or error-free. Nothing in these Terms limits rights you have as a consumer that can’t be limited by contract. VERIFY per launch country (EU / UK consumer law, US states).

12. Limitation of liability

To the extent the law allows, we’re not liable for indirect, incidental or consequential losses, or for decisions you make based on the app’s content, including AI answers. Our total liability to you for any claim about the app is limited to the amount you paid for PaperSays in the 12 months before the claim (or USD 50 if you paid nothing). We don’t limit liability that can’t be limited by law (for example for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or fraud). VERIFY wording and cap with the lawyer.

13. Changes to these Terms

We may update these Terms, for example when we add features or the law changes. We’ll post the new version at https://papersays.com/terms and update the date. If a change is significant (for example to prices, subscriptions or how we use your content), we’ll tell you in the app before it applies. If you don’t agree, stop using the app and cancel your subscription; continuing to use it means you accept the new Terms.

14. Law and disputes

These Terms are governed by the laws of {jurisdiction}, without affecting mandatory consumer protections of the country where you live. Please contact us first at support@papersays.com; most issues can be solved that way. VERIFY jurisdiction, courts and any dispute-resolution clause (no arbitration clause without legal advice).
