Why Brain Decoders Drift Between Sessions

Implanted speech decoders work well on day one and degrade over weeks. A benchmark study tests which recalibration tricks actually help.

In one paragraph

This preprint benchmarks five decoder adaptation methods on recordings from 9 participants with intracortical implants over 14 months. Unsupervised alignment of neural feature distributions recovered most of the lost accuracy. The authors also show that some popular methods fail under rapid signal change. The episode is technical and covers the evaluation protocol in detail.
